Operation
Vets was founded by John T. Powers, a University of Rhode Island graduate.
In 2005 one of John’s childhood friends, a United States Marine Corp
infantryman came home with wounds of war from a tour in Afghanistan. After
seeing the effects war had on his friend and realizing he probably wasn’t the
only veteran dealing with readjustment issues he decided to do something. He
started reading, writing, and talking to veterans of past wars and now Iraq and Afghanistan veterans willing to share their on
going struggles and experiences.
During his last year as an undergraduate he created a project called Veterans
Resource Guide: Healing our Veterans and Families. The mission was to provide
resources to veterans and families to ease the stress of deployments and
readjustment issues. It was first published in September 2007, currently in its
2nd publication. These soldiers have served our country now it’s time
to serve our soldiers.
